Into the woods with a camera, eh? Here we go again.
I wish the photographers would do a better job at self policing. They know one another. There is a tendency for them to share information. Perhaps when those "once-in-a-lifetime" shots are displayed, the hard questions should be asked: "What did you do to get that picture?" Publishers should be aware and not accept photos that were taken under suspicious conditions. Witnesses might go ahead and publicly identify those who clearly display bad behavior. With all the advice and cautions raised on these lists in the interest of these birds, the perpetrators will not likely abide by good practices anyway. But at least we can raise the level of attention paid to the miscreants. It is really a pity. But here we are again dealing with a rare bird; this one with the potential for establishing the first documented nesting in the state, only to be thwarted by yet another photographer. As for me, when will I ever learn? I thought that by asking for restraint, that folks would be on good behavior. Most birders and photographers were. Apparently I was wrong though; all it takes is one. I hope the damage to the nesting birds, if any, was minimal. Will I post sightings with locations such as the kites again? Not likely. Will others? Not likely. We all lose. I had it Monday evening around 7.30 pm. Be weary and considerate though, because a local told me somebody went into the woods with a camera a few weeks ago and she hadn't seen the birds for a few weeks, but David Burg and I found one of the birds preening in a dead tree heading uphill on mapletown road from denato.
