Yesterday I visited the West End of Jones Beach between 6:30 and 7. I saw a good number of black skimmers on the sand bar near the coast guard station and a few merlins flying around. The highlight was a buff-breasted sandpiper in the median of the exit at the ocean parking lot.
After leaving Jones Beach due to the high number of mosquitoes I went to the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) and observed a dozen blue-winged teal, a single solitary sandpiper, a male american kestrel, a hawk (presumably cooper's) being chased by jays and several eastern phoebes. The Western Kingbird which had been reported on saturday could not be found. Photos of these birds can be seen by viewing my blog here: http://birdsoflongisland.blogspot.com/2010/09/three-new-species.html -- - Luke Ormand, Flanders www.WildLongIsland.blogspot.com www.BirdsOfLongIsland.blogspot.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
