Norm Klein and I birded all around Sunken Meadow State Park late this morning thru the early afternoon today. Overall, it wasn't very birdy. The highlight was a flock of ten Pine Siskins that flew over and landed in the conifers just east of Field 3. Soon after, another small flock of Pine Siskins flew over and started to feed in the pines. It was nice to actually watch them feed rather than see them flyby. The only other birds of note were a Greater Yellowlegs, Great Egret, 12 Hooded Mergansers, 7 Ruddy Ducks, and a female Bufflehead all on the upper reaches of Sunken Meadow Creek. Back on Friday(Nov 12) I watched a nice movement of all three species of Scoter on the LI Sound, as well as decent numbers of Common and Red-throated Loons, Red-breasted Mergansers, and a single Common Eider. As far as landbirds go, 2 American Pipits, 7+ Eastern Bluebirds(amid the flocks of Robins and waxwings), several flocks of Cedar Waxwings, 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, and Purple Finch were all observed early Friday morning.
