Highlights of recent reports from the Niagara Frontier Region include COMMON REDPOLL, EASTERN TOWHEE, GRAY CATBIRD, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and KING EIDER.

January 1, two reports of 100 COMMON REDPOLLS at feeders in the Niagara County Town of Wilson and Orleans County Town of Shelby. Single numbers of COMMON REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS were also reported at several other locations around January 1.

December 28 and 29, an EASTERN TOWHEE at a feeder on Staley Road on Grand Island.

January 3 on the Hamburg-East Aurora Count, a GRAY CATBIRD at Birdsong Park on Jewett Holmwood Road in Orchard Park, 60 CEDAR WAXWINGS on Jewett Holmwood Road and a single EVENING GROSBEAK on private property. Other species on the count - PILEATED WOODPECKER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and WHITE-THR. SPARROW.

The December 28 Oak Orchard Count, including the Iroquois Refuge and surrounding areas, reported BALD EAGLE, ROUGH- LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, GREAT HORNED OWL, NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, HORNED LARK, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, AMERICAN ROBIN, WHITE-THR. SPARROW, WHITE-CR. SPARROW, LAPLAND LONGSPUR and SNOW BUNTING, plus 16 PINE SISKINS on Eagle Harbor Road outside of Medina in Orleans County.

At Point Breeze, on Lake Ontario at the east boundary of the BOS region, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has returned for another winter at this location, along with a KING EIDER.

During the last week of December, gulls on the Niagara River at the power plants and falls included LITTLE GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, probable CALIFORNIA GULL, THAYER'S GULL, 15 ICELAND GULLS, L. BLACK-B. GULL and a high count of 8 GLAUCOUS GULLS. Also, two PURPLE SANDPIPERS above Niagara Falls off the Gatehouse in Ontario on December 29. And, two reports of five VULTURES over the lower Niagara River, possibly very rare BLACK VULTURES.

Also in December, massive flocks of waterfowl, estimated at over 50,000 birds, along the Robert Moses Parkway in Niagara Falls, New York. Most abundant were COMMON GOLDENEYE, REDHEAD, CANVASBACK and GREATER SCAUP.

Other recent reports - At Dunkirk Harbor, 2 RUDDY DUCKS and abundant MERGANSERS. And, SHORT-EARED OWLS still on Posson Road north of the Iroquois Refuge in Shelby.
