HARLEQUIN DUCK was the highlight of reports received January 20
through January 27 from the Niagara Frontier Region.
January 22, a first winter HARLEQUIN DUCK was reported at Dunkirk
Harbor, on Lake Erie in Chautauqua County. Still present on the 23rd,
the HARLEQUIN DUCK has provided excellent views on either side the
main pier. The power plant at the harbor creates a winter oasis
surrounded by the frozen lake. Also at Dunkirk - a rare on Lake Erie
LONG-
TAILED DUCK, RED-THROATED LOON, first winter LITTLE GULL, PEREGRINE
FALCON, abundant waterfowl and up to 9 BALD EAGLES.
A good find of winter gulls away from Niagara Falls - on the upper
Niagara River at Rich's Marina, on Austin Street in Buffalo's
Riverside area. January 22, 2 ICELAND GULLS, THAYER'S GULL, 4 GLAUCOUS
GULLS and a GLAUCOUS x HERRING GULL hybrid, known as "NELSON'S GULL",
among over 100 HERRING GULLS.
Also on the upper Niagara River, - 61 TUNDRA SWANS off Grand Island,
female NORTHERN PINTAIL at the end of Aqua Lane in Tonawanda, and a
total of four BALD EAGLES from Grand Island, Strawberry Island and
Buffalo.
Other recent reports - up to 200 WILD TURKEYS in the deep snow,
found on a survey of Chautauqua County. MERLIN at Fort Niagara State
Park in Porter. RED-BELLIED WDPKR. at a feeder in Niagara Falls, New
York. PILEATED WOODPECKER and WHITE-
THR. SPARROW at Birdsong Park in Orchard Park. 38 AMERICAN ROBINS
and 5 RED-W. BLACKBIRDS on Two Mile Creek Road in Tonawanda. In the
Lake Ontario Plains, 500 SNOW BUNTINGS with a few LAPLAND LONGSPURS
and HORNED LARKS on Hulbert Road in Wilson. And, over 350 SNOW
BUNTINGS on McLernon Road in the Genesee County Town of Bethany.
The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, February 3. Please
