Having seen groups of five to twelve Black Vultures throughout the winter here in southern Dutchess Co., had to wonder where they might be roosting. A phone call yesterday afternoon reporting a flock of "big black birds" in trees and on a home roof lead Barbara and I to a residential area of Wappinger Falls to find over 50 BLVU and 6 TUVU roosting in pine trees. We arrived about 4:55PM at the site to see a few stragglers continuing to come in to the roost. They filled the four to five pines making it difficult for an accurate count but there were conservatively fifty BLVU there as seen from Namoth Rd. I remember when a single sighting of a black was noteworthy in the summer! The location is near the intersection of Pye Lane and Rock Rd, between Pye Lane and Namoth Rd to the north in the Town of Wappinger. If visiting this site please be respectful of the residents by not blocking driveways nor trespassing.
