A walk down the fisherman's road on the western edge of Caumsett State Park
was relatively productive today, although the highlight was not a species
typically expected in May. Around 8:00 a small flock of amount five geese
flew in from the east, and when they touched down I noticed an adult Greater
White-fronted among them. At first inspection the bill appeared relatively
pink, but in better light it seemed more orange. I managed to get several
poor photos with my phone which can be found at
https://picasaweb.google.com/bbomkamp/2011LongIsland# The bird did not
appear to be of a domestic origin, and I would surmise that the flock it was
traveling with was made up of migrants, as opposed to resident birds.

Overall, the numbers of migrants were relatively large but low in diversity
with only nine species of warbler seen.
