Hempstead Lake SP 25 August

I joined the South Shore Audubon Thursday walk this morning. Land birding was
uneventful for the most part. At the north end of South Pond where the open
field constricts the expanse of the pond next to McDonald Pond, there was a
huge slick of floating debris, sticks and leaves. Around the periphery and
occasionally in the center was a flitting bird (reminiscent of a Storm-Petrol).
The flight was very un-tern like when first seen. It turned out to be an adult
BLACK TERN molting from Summer to Winter plumage. A totally unexpected bird in
that location.
