Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside, NY: 23 May A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was over by the golf course. Clearly seen by scope, but not identifiable. Fortunately, it was singing.
We flushed a CLAPPER RAIL and heard several others. Saltmarsh Sparrows have been seen calling from the marsh, however, not this morning. No resident Seaside Sparrows or Marsh Wrens yet. Last Sunday, the Nickerson Beach colony hosted 300+ BLACK SKIMMERS and 100+ COMMON TERNS. Numbers still building Not much evidence of active breeding, but there were several AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER chicks among the several dozen adults. First post in a while. Recovering from a bad back and just getting out and about.
