Saturday was a challenging day on the Niagara River (Niagara Falls NY & ON, and Lewiston, NY - Niagara County), with intermittent rain and fog hampering visibility, especially late in the day when you couldn't even see the water at Adam Beck. We started on the American side in Lewiston, visiting the Docks, then Whirlpool State Park, and finally Goat Island. The afternoon was spent on the Canadian side, starting at the Control Gates in Chippewa, the area along the river across from the Winter Gardens, and another stop at the Whirlpool (fog already too thick). We tallied 8 species of Gull, but Thayer's and Iceland only provided brief glimpses (it would have been nice to see at Adam Beck!!!). Highlights below:
Common Loon - 2 below Horseshoe Falls Double-crested Cormorant - 6 Great Blue Heron - 2 Lewiston) Tundra Swan - 50+ Chippewa 8 species of duck Peregrine Falcon - 1 adult between Horseshoe and American Falls Bonaparte's Gull - 500+ (only two immature) Iceland Gull - 1 adult Chippewa Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 adult Chippewa Glaucous Gull - 2 1st winter (one Lewiston, one Chippewa) Brett Lakeshore Nature Tours bmew...@lakeshorenaturetours.com 716-628-8226 www.LakeshoreNatureTours.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
