I spent ~ 3 hours this afternoon slowly driving some of Riverhead's farm roads,
primarily looking for longspurs. Between the snow plows, fog, drizzle, ground
water, snow drifts and a smattering of cars (all of which, going to fast for
the conditions just described) I did manage to see quite a few birds. Most of
these were within 4 feet of the road feeding, with many in the road proper. It
simply amazes me how tolerant birds can be of a very slow passing car
(blind)...especially Horned Larks, without flushing !
Totals for the day were: 1 flyover, but non-threatening, Sharp-shinned Hawk; ~
85 Horned Larks;`~ 20 Savannah Sparrows; ~ 10 White-throated Sparrows; ~ 15
White-crowned Sparrows, ~25 Song Sparrows and ~ 15 Dark-eyed Juncos.
What will the 'morrow bring ?
Cheers,Bob
