Highlights of reports received March 28 through April 4 from the Niagara Frontier Region include VEGA GULL, INDIGO BUNTING, EURASIAN WIGEON and NOR. SAW-WHET OWL. April 1, on Lake Erie, a remarkable VEGA GULL or EAST ASIAN HERRING GULL was photographed at Dunkirk Harbor. A first record of this species or sub-species in the BOS region, and a likely addition to the New York State checklist. Not a rare bird, but an unprecedented date - an INDIGO BUNTING photographed at a feeder in the Niagara County Town of Lockport on March 30; nearly a month ahead the region's earliest arrival date. EURASIAN WIGEON, March 31, at Windmill Marsh in the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, viewed from both the Albion Road tower and from the marsh dike, over a half-mile south from East Shelby Road. Flocks of TUNDRA SWANS over several locations and on small ponds. In Buffalo, a NOR. SAW-WHET OWL at Forest Lawn Cemetery, April 1, in a pine tree on the ridge above the maintenance dump. Also on the ridge and along the creek - 2 FOX SPARROWS, RED-BR. NUTHATCH, WINTER WREN, YELLOW-R. WARBLER, and numerous BROWN CREEPERS and GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS. EASTERN PHOEBES arrived at several locations this week. TREE SWALLOWS continue to feed over partially frozen waters. EASTERN MEADOWLARKS feeding on roadsides along snow covered fields in Cattaraugus County. Nine RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the Swallow Hollow Trail in the Iroquois Refuge. And a LESSER YELLOWLEGS over the Batavia Waste Water Plant. April 3, a female EVENING GROSBEAK, at a feeder in the Town of Wilson. COMMON REDPOLLS still at the same feeder. OSPREYS widely noted this week. The Hamburg Hawkwatch at Lakeside Cemetery on Camp Road has been dominated by TURKEY VULTURES so far, followed by RED-TAILED HAWKS and RED- SHOULDERED HAWKS, plus a season total to date of 27 BALD EAGLES. Visitors are welcome at the daily watch, and breakthrough flights are expected. GREAT EGRETS have also returned to nesting sites - 5 GREAT EGRETS with 28 BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS above Niagara Falls, and a single GREAT EGRET at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. Six more BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS at Dunkirk Harbor. At Niagara Falls, Dunkirk Harbor and LaSalle Park in Buffalo, gulls have included LITTLE GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL and the HERRING GULL X GLAUCOUS GULL hybrid NELSON'S GULL. Back on March 28, a second winter THAYER'S GULL at the Town of Tonawanda boat launch on River Road. Also this week, 3 COMMON LOONS over North Buffalo, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE in the Cattaraugus County Town of Hinsdale. The BOS April meeting will be on Wednesday, April 10, at 7 PM. Timothy DePriest of the New York State DEC will present a program on habitat improvements on the upper Niagara River islands. Visitors are always welcome at BOS meetings.
