There was a good eastward push of waterbirds, principally loons and gannets
along the Atlantic coast this morning. A 90 minute count from East Hampton
(Suffolk Co.) tallied 2,383 Red-throated Loons, 735 Common Loons, 119 loon
sp., 901 scoter (all 3 sp.) and 466 Northern Gannets. Other highlights
included 67 Razorbills, many in alternate plumage, 4 Red-necked Grebes, 6
Blue-winged Teal and 12 Great Cormorants. Forty-one Long-tailed Ducks was a
good showing from the oceanside of the peninsula, all in their dark
alternate plumage. Later I found a tight raft of 90 Long-tailed Ducks at
Montauk Point, where there was little activity beyond a flyby male
Harlequin Duck.
