Went to observe the adult Red-headed Woodpecker today from about 11am to 1:30pm
and was rewarded with great behavior and views of this gorgeous bird.  It also
offered alot better photo ops than the ones in Ridgewood, NJ I was going to.
It was located along the yellow woodchip trail behind the golf range just south
of Orchard Beach Rd.  If you follow the trail going west it will come to a more
open area of mostly black locust trees and there will be a fallen tree across
the trail before it goes down slope with a clearing to the left.  The bird was
mostly in this area while I was there.  It spent most of it's time foraging and
chasing the Red-bellied Woodpecker and Yellow-bellied sapsucker away from it's
feeding territory.  It was cool to have four species of woodpeckers in view at
once (also had a downy).  It spent some time on the ground and at eye level but
was mostly mid level or higher.  In addition to the previously mentioned birds
I also
had while in the area both kinglets, many Yellow-rumped warblers, Brown
Creeper, lots of Song and White-throated Sparrows, Field Sparrows, Dark-eyed
Juncos, many American Robins, Common Grackles, Hermit Thrush, American
Goldfinch, Red-tailed Hawk, Blue Jays, and White-breasted Nuthatch.
