  The Buffalo Bird Report is a service provided by your
  Buffalo Museum of Science and the Buffalo Ornithological
  Society. To contact the Science Museum, call 896-5200. Press
  the pound key to report sightings before the end of this
  report.

  TUFTED DUCK and HARLEQUIN DUCK were the highlights of
  reports received January 2 through January 9 from the
  Niagara Frontier Region.

  January 9, a female TUFTED DUCK at the source of the Niagara
  River. Just the second record for the region, the TUFTED
  DUCK was among a flock of SCAUP off the end of the Bird
  Island Pier in Buffalo.

  Further down the river, January 5, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK
  off the Black Rock Canal pier at the north end of Squaw
  Island Park in Buffalo's Black Rock section. Also in the
  area - L. BLACK-B. GULL, several ICELAND GULLS and only a
  few BONAPARTE'S GULLS, plus 2 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 2 BALD
  EAGLES and hunting PEREGRINE FALCONS.

  January 9 at a feeder in Medina, an EASTERN TOWHEE. In
  Wilson, by Lake Ontario, feeders attracted a CHIPPING
  SPARROW on January 3.

  SNOWY OWLS continue at widespread locations. Back on December
  27, on the Oak Orchard Christmas Count, centered on the
  Iroquois Refuge, 5 SNOWY OWLS, plus BARRED OWL, 4 SHORT-
  EARED OWLS, 17 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 7 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, 10
  AMERICAN KESTRELS, 2 MERLINS, WINTER WREN, 26 GOLDEN-CR.
  KINGLETS, GRAY CATBIRD, 7 YELLOW-R. WARBLERS, 3 WHITE-CR.
  SPARROWS and a PURPLE FINCH.

  SHORT-EARED OWLS continue in the fields along Meahl Road in
  the Niagara County Town of Cambria, along with a SNOWY OWL,
  ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and NORTHERN HARRIERS. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS
  and NORTHERN HARRIERS also on Posson Road in the Town of
  Shelby, north of the Iroquois Refuge.

  And, January 6, a HORNED GREBE grounded during blizzard
  condition in North Boston, in southern Erie County.

  The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, January
