A few hours birding the Jones Beach strip today produced a dark-morph Rough-legged Hawk on the marsh viewed from Gilgo, Town of Babylon, and the Jones Beach Northern Shrike. The shrike was in the dunes south of the ramp between the eastbound Bay Parkway and the eastbound Ocean Parkway, about 1/4 mile east of the Nature Center at West End 1. We also saw a Snowy Owl and a Nothern Harrier tussling over a Black Duck carcass in the marsh between Cedar Beach Marina and Gilgo. The owl won the prize.
