This morning I observed a Ross's Goose in a farm field along the north side of CR-48 just west of Horton's Avenue in Southold. The bird was located at the far north end of the field and viewing was less than ideal and too distant to rule out hybrid. I returned later around 11:00 AM to find the Ross's Goose in better light and closer to the road allowing for better, clinching views.
The question is whether or not this is the same goose that was discovered in Riverhead on 3/1/14. Initial thoughts through photo comparison are inconclusive and will likely remain so. I'm currently in Riverhead searching for geese but there are slim pickings in the area. A single Greater White-fronted Goose is in the southern most field along the east side of Roanoke Avenue (south of Reeves Ave.).
