For anyone interested, the hybrid goose *(presumably Brant x Cackling)* that
Anya reported, continues at Randall's Island.

I believe the discussion thread was not posted to eBirdsnyc and so I have
included it here for those of you who might be interested.

Cheers!

Shai's sleuth work led to my post from two winters ago. If you were looking

Wilson's http://www.oceanwanderers.com/OddBrant.html . The upshot of this
is that the Randall's Island bird is very likely the same one that's been
seen intermittently at Flushing Meadow - Corona Park in Queens since
January 2003. The interaction of the hybrid with other Brant, as reported
by Anya, is consistent with what I've seen.

Cool-looking bird!

It or one like it seems to pop up around here about every three years or
so, at intervals just long enough that it's difficult to remember all the
details. I found this archived page and am sure I have some stuff about it
in my files:

Hi all;

A hybrid goose has spent the winter with the brant flock on Randall's
Island, first noted (by me, at least) in January the same day the barnacle
goose was found. It appears very similar to a dark brant, but aside from
the obvious darker coloration, particularly on the flanks, and reduced
black on the neck, there is also reduced white uppertail coverts and subtly
different head and neck shape. Brant x Cackling goose has been suggested
and seems plausible to me, although I don't know if this combination has
been ever definitively recorded. A few pictures taken today are on my
flickr page, below. Also of interest, every time I have seen it this bird
has kept to the very edge of the brant flock- the other birds don't seem
fond of it.
