  The Buffalo Bird Report is a service provided by your
  Buffalo Museum of Science and the Buffalo Ornithological

  Highlights of reports received April 17 through April 24
  from the Niagara Frontier Region include WESTERN GREBE and
  YELLOW-THR. WARBLER.

  April 18, an exceptional rarity for the region - a WESTERN
  GREBE on Lake Ontario off Barker Park in the Orleans County
  Town of Somerset. The grebe was one-half mile off shore with
  over 140 RED-NECKED GREBES and over 100 HORNED GREBES. This
  would be the first record of WESTERN GREBE since 1999.

  In Buffalo, April 24, a YELLOW-THR. WARBLER at Forest Lawn,
  found in the spruces at Mirror Lake.

  Also in Buffalo, an early HOODED WARBLER continued at Tifft
  Nature Preserve through at least April 20. An EASTERN WHIP-
  POOR-WILL called along the Service Road at Tifft on April
  18. Other reports from Tifft and nearby Times Beach Nature
  Preserve - CASPIAN TERN, AMERICAN BITTERN, GREEN HERON,
  VIRGINIA RAIL, YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER,
  AMERICAN KESTREL, N. ROUGH-W. SWALLOW, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER
  WREN, BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, RUBY-CR.
  KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, BROWN
  THRASHER, EASTERN TOWHEE, AMER. TREE SPARROW, FOX SPARROW,
  WHITE-THR. SPARROW and PURPLE FINCH.

  GRAY CATBIRD was first noted April 18, in the Town of
  Newstead. In Niagara County, April 19, SANDHILL CRANE along
  Route 18 near Dickersonville Road.

  Other reports this week - COMMON RAVEN with PILEATED
  WOODPECKER and YELLOW-R. WARBLER at Birdsong Park on Jewett
  Holmwood Road in Orchard Park. COMMON RAVEN also carrying
  food to the River Road power plant in Tonawanda. Abundant
  numbers of BONAPARTE'S GULLS, COMMON TERNS, and D.-CREST.
  CORMORANTS on the upper Niagara River at Black Rock and
  Riverside. Migrant BROAD-WINGED HAWKS over Tifft Nature
  Preserve, Buffalo and Tonawanda. Ten RUSTY BLACKBIRDS near
  Rapids in Lockport. A single RUSTY BLACKBIRD and an AMERICAN
  CROW at a feeder in Cheektowaga. And, a VESPER SPARROW at a
  feeder at Sunset Beach, on Lake Ontario in Orleans County.
