Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
April 28, 2014

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     5/2: An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was found at the mucklands along Rt.31. An 
EURASIAN WIGEON was spotted in a new area near Morgan Road called the Deep Muck 
and Mitigation Marsh.
     5/3: A GLOSSY IBIS was seen on Carncross Road near the bridge. A 
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was found on Carncross also. A BLACK TERN was seenat 
Tschache Pool.
     5/4: 2 GLOSSY IBISES were seen at the visitors center. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR 
was seen along the Wildlife Trail.


Derby Hill
------------

     It was hit or miss at Derby this week. Except for 5/1 with 4,051 hawks and 
5/2 with just over a thousand the numbers were in the low hundreds. There still 
should be some good BROAD-WING days before the season is over.


Oswego County
------------

     Phillips Point lake watch on Oneida Lake was better this week with good 
numbers of COMMON LIINS, RED-NECKED GREBES and BONAPARTE’S GULLS. WHITE-WINGED 
SCOTER and a BLACK TERN were also seen.
     5/2: A GREAT EGRET was seen at Sunset Bay Park.
     5/3: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at Sunset Bay Park.
     5/4: An EURASIAN WIGEON continues at the Rt. 6 wetlands in Volnay.


Onondaga County
-------------

     4/29: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at the end of the Creekwalk 
near Carousel Center.


Jefferson County
------------

     5/2: 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were found at Fort Drum.


Madison County
------------

     4/30: A SNOWY OWL was seen at the Sky High Sod Farm north of Chittenango. 
It was seen also on 5/1.
     5/4: 2 FOS RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were at a feeder on Carpenter Road 
near Sheds.

Compilers Note
------------

     Migration is starting to get into full swing. I can’t report every new 
bird and location since they are in all areas. I suggest getting out and 
finding them for yourself. The next two weeks will be the best birding of the 
year.
