He eye socket is indeed empty. Herb Houghton from NJ showed my a picture today where the empty socket was evident. Herb also states that he took a photo of the bird head on that shows the convex shape of the birds right eye and a concave area where the left eye should be. He has a photo web site and can be reached through it. Googling his name will get you there.
