I spent time on the beach in the eastern Rockaways this weekend each
morning early. Species diversity wasn't great, but the following were the
highlights:

1 young Least Tern on Saturday
2 Gull-billed Terns on Sunday
5 Black Scoter on Saturday and Sunday, just 1 today
1 Piping Plover on Saturday and Sunday
large numbers of Sanderling and Semipalmated Plover each day

Most interestingly is that what I initially thought was just a large roost
of Black Skimmers on the beach on Saturday (about 400 birds) actually
turned out to be a still active colony, with some completely downy young
still in the "nest." Seems awful late for such young birds to have a chance
to make it.

Good Birding,
Corey Finger
