Let's give a warm welcome to author Dan Koeppel, who is travelling from
afar to pay a brief visit to Queens. Dan's book To See Every Bird on Earth:
A Father, A Son, and a Lifelong Obsession describes his late father
Richard's transformation from young naturalist to a Big Lister, with a life
list of over 7,000 bird species.

Richard Koeppel (1935-2012) got his start in birding right here
in Queens in 1947, at age 12. He became hooked on birding after observing a
Brown Thrasher in Flushing Meadows, which sparked his desire to learn more
about all birds. He joined the Queens County Bird Club, which provided
direction and resources. He explored "Bayside Woods" as a magical escape
from his parents' home. Unfortunately, Richard missed his calling as an
ornithologist, opting for a career in medicine. He married, had two sons,
and divorced. In 1973, he took his first tropical birding trip, where he
began to formulate his lifelong dream of seeing every bird species in
existence.

Dan Koeppel grew up in Douglaston, Queens, and graduated from
Hampshire College with a degree in language and communications. In 1990, he
left for Los Angeles, California, where he resides with his wife and two
young sons. Dan is an outdoors, nature, and adventure writer. He was a
senior editor of Mountain Bike magazine and was elected to the Mountain Bike
Hall of Fame, and currently contributes to magazines such as National
Geographic, Wired, Backpacker, Popular Science, and Popular Mechanics. He
has written episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation. His most recent
book, "Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World" has been
published in six languages.

Please join us in saying "Welcome Back, Koeppel". Well the
names have all changed since you hung around, but those dreams have remained
. Dan, hope you will find that the spirit of birding is still alive and
well in Queens!

Copies of Dan's book will be available for sale at the meeting.
