While lake-watching in Wilson, Niagara County, this morning, a PURPLE SANDPIPER landed on the pier. Unfortunately, it did not stay long enough for a photo though I had a good look. This is the earliest Purple Sandpiper I have ever seen in the region, and amazingly, the first I have ever seen on Lake Ontario. A SNOW BUNTING also stopped on the pier and spent a while feeding there. It was a decent flight today, with Red-breasted Mergansers reaching 693 individuals, my highest count by far this fall. Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Bonaparte's Gulls also reached seasonal highs for this lake-watch site.
