I had it right next to a pair of Mallards for a nice size comparison and from my angle the breast looked dusky (low sun in background) - but the shape of the bill did bother me a lot (Sibley does allow for some variation). Seeing Peter’s photos I see the breast was not as dusky (not always a good indicator, though) and that problematic bill. So, I concede, a damn small Lesser or some odd hybrid.
