Under the "more" menu in Gmail select "Filter Messages Like These" and you should see that Gmail recognizes the email as coming from a list. In the "has the words" field it will show list:(<nysbirds-l.cornell.edu>)
click "create filter with this search" at lower right select "never send it to spam" and whatever other actions you want and create the filter.
