Which way do the stripes on the head run? If across the top,(eye to eye) it's a woodcock. If front to back, it's a snipe. Patricia Lindsay Bay Shore

We use the photos on our end for ID verification where possible. It would be a great feature to add in the future though. For what its worth, it looks like a woodcock to me! My colleague thought it was a woodcock but showed it to his mom over the holiday and she thought it was a snipe. Her husband thought it was a woodcock. I assumed it was a woodcock because of its proximity to Bryant Park. I know I'm not supposed to attach photos and I don't have a site where I post on so I thought maybe people could weigh in using the photo I uploaded to d-bird.org <http://d-bird.org> but unfortunately, I can't seem to find the map on d-bird.org <http://d-bird.org> that shows all the pinned birds and photos. I know I've seen photos of birds I posted to the site during last fall's migration and immediately after I posted on Monday, the photo did not appear but I figured that it took some time. Now I can't even find the map that shows the locations of the birds people have reported and the purported link takes you to research findings. If anyone is able to see the photo eventually, we would love input on this Thanksgiving debate. Apologies for the photo which does not show the top of the head where one might be able to distinguish stripes going across vs down. I found a dead American Woodcock on the east side of 5th Ave. between 39th and 40th Streets this morning (this is just outside Bryant Park, across the street from the main library). Beak seemed undamaged and legs were pointing straight back. It was positioned close to an 8 story building with big windows.
