I appreciate these ebird alerts...BUT should we assume that the list from
Ithaca was from a zoo of some sort?? kelp gull, fluttering shearwater, sacred
kingfisher, tui, variable oystercatcher..etc. really in New York State??? IF
so some of us should be making a bee-line up there, but I doubt it...

- Comments: "Rare but not entirely unexpected in this context. Sitting on spit
with small group of Dunlin. Very clearly smaller (roughly half the size of the
Dunlin, give or take). Smaller, shorter bill, slight droop with fine tip, dark
legs. Color paler gray/brown than Dunlin, but not as white/pale as Sanderling.
The flock took flight before I could get photos, flushed by a NOHA. May have
extremely poor photos in flight that at least show its a peep. Separable from
LESA by dark legs and paler coloration. Difficult to separate from SESA, but I
would assume the bill would appear heavier on a SESA, plus, WESA is far more
expected in this context than SESA."

- Comments: "Continuing bird. When I arrived about 12:15, there were 4 or 5
birders present who had just seen the bird, but it was currently not being
seen. Before they left, I was given the places where it had been seen and the
direction it had flown to. Shortly, 3 more birders arrived in two parties, so
we split up the two who were together so that there could be phone contact and
formed two parties of two. I was in the party that looked into the yard from
the cornfield and the other party looked from the edge of the car wash. Both
parties eventually got on the bird. In the photo, the bird is sitting in an
apple tree near the blue house. Later it was seen foraging on the ground near
the blue shed."

- Comments: "continuing bird (first reported here by Mark Hollenbeck on 1
January), a very fine looking adult male but frustratingly elusive: was not
seen while I was present until it suddenly appeared at ca 16:17, in the apple
tree directly behind the blue house just north of the car wash. no sooner had I
called it out than it quickly dropped down out of sight from us (presumably
going either to the ground or to a bird feeder, but for us it was out of sight
behind a small blue shed). someone (not sure who) spotted it again, but it
moved once more before I got on it. after some rushing back and forth on our
part Lee Ann then spotted it again in the apple tree, where it stayed for a bit
but was partially obscured, before it flew off, apparently heading west across
the road. so after almost 2 hours of waiting, I saw it twice, for less than 30
seconds total - good thing it's a distinctive bird.
when I arrived, the few observers present were watching from the car wash
immediately adjacent to (but just south of) the yard in question. I stayed
there for most of the afternoon, even as other observers wandered up and down
the road or tried loops around the neighborhood. after 16:00, most of us
ventured into the edge of the corn field just to the north of the blue house,
and it was from here that most of us saw the thrush when it returned, briefly,
in late afternoon."

Sandy Covington and others. I saw in on the ground at the corner of the very
small blue shed. Could not jocky into position around others in the few seconds
it allowed us. Sandy did get a picture of it in the apple tree. I saw it very
well for a couple seconds. Very colorful looked like red/orange horizontal
stripes from what I remember. The time was around 4:35 but I would trust
other's times over mine as I am writing this at 5:09PM"

- Comments: "Spotted with other seekers between the Music Pagoda and the
Nethermead Arches, along the stream. Observed it for 10 minutes. She flew from
a mid-story branch down to the ground by the water, foraging. Then hoped onto a
low lying branch where she remained almost motionless for a couple of minutes.
Beautiful orange throat and breast, even in the prevailing low light. Another
lifer this week!"

Thrush about the size of a Robin with orange wing bars, orange wash on throat
and chest, dark gray necklace, dark eye stripe with pale supercilium.

This time it was perched in a tree about 30 feet from the ground, above the
path that leads from center drive to the broken stairs by the ravine. Flew down
to the ground somewhere on the slope just west of ravine. Seen clearly but too
briefly for a photo."
