New York County, including Manhattan island (in N.Y. City) Sunday, Oct. 10th:
Always heartening to see a strong and supportive turnout in the Linnaean Society of New York’s annual walks in memory of the late, great Starr Saphir (who led countless guided walks in Central Park, as well as guiding as far-away as Kenya and more-regularly than there in the southern & SW USA), with Lenore Swenson guiding on these ever-popular later walks through Central Park - many species were found on this latest edition and for a day with some iffy-damp weather it was a great success with a nice mix of early- and mid-autumn birds seen. A Pied-billed Grebe was on the Central Park reservoir (again) with a single American Coot remaining as well; duckage in that park still ‘limited' to Wood Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, and Northern Shovelers as well as much-more-regular Gadwall and of course many Malllards, plus the on-&-off American Black Ducks (which are as or more regular on the rivers around Manhattan, as in Central Park’s waterbodies) - & some Canada Geese. Out on Randall’s Island, at least 1 Nelson’s Sparrow was again seen, in & around the NE shore’s saltmarsh along with some other species of sparrows from just that one portion of that island. Some (Atlantic) Brant have been showing again at that location and in a few other county locations just lately. good birding to all, Tom Fiore manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
