New York County (in N.Y. City) including Manhattan & Randall’s Island -
Thursday, Oct. 28th:

A Yellow-breasted Chat has by now entertained several hundred visitors as it
continued for Thursday in a smaller greenspace just west of Bryant Park in
midtown Manhattan.

A Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was seen at Central Park by the Lake, perhaps a
lingering (young) bird. More Purple Finch have started to arrive; this going
along with a great many sparrow arrivals, with [Red] Fox Sparrows among them,
and again a number of Vesper Sparrow sightings, the latter from Randall’s
Island (2 there; M.B. Kooper), also from Inwood Hill Park, & one at the Pinetum
area in Central Park, all Thursday. Nelson’s Sparrow was also again found on
Randall’s Island. Red-breasted Nuthatch also has increased again, at least a
bit, and should be watched for potentially larger movements. Hooded Mergansers
arrived at Central Park.

Plenty of migration has been occurring in recent days and on through Friday, so
more to report on fairly soon.

Good birding to all,

Tom Fiore
