Queens County Bird Club Zoom Presentation: Sean Grace "Fall Raptor Migration &
Conservation"

When: Oct. 19, 2022, 07:30 PM Eastern Time (USA and Canada)

In conjunction with Fall Raptor Migration, Sean Grace's Zoom Presentation will
feature fall raptor migration and conservation at Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania.
Sean Grace is President of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and has a passion for raptor
conservation and education and has nearly 20 years of experience in
conservation education and leadership. He is responsible for effective,
creative and productive mission-based programs and manages the professional
staff, programs, budget, fundraising and physical facilities.
Hawk Mountain founded the science of migration ecology and is well known for
their annual raptor count since 1934, tracking sixteen species of raptors along
the Kittatinny Ridge. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the world first refuge for
birds of prey and an international center for raptor conservation. Founded in
1934 by pioneer conservationist Rosalie Edge, the Sanctuary was instrumental in
reversing the widespread persecution of raptors. Today Hawk Mountain continues
its innovative work to protect birds of prey through integrated scientific
monitoring and research, public education and engagement, and professional
conservation training. Department heads are leaders in the field and eight
biologists and educators headline the program staff including three Ph.D.-level
scientists, a bilingual director of education, an award-winning stewardship
team, along with Visitor Center, administrative and support staff. In the last
decade, the Sanctuary has been at the forefront of globally important
scientific efforts to monitor raptor populations and to study the dynamics of
their migration and ecology, while its acclaimed and international Conservation
Science Training Program has graduated more than 475 individuals from 76
countries on six continents. Publicly, the 2,500-acre Sanctuary welcomes an
average 60,000 people per year to connect them with nature and, during spring
and autumn, with migratory raptors that slope soar along the ridge. The
organization’s budget of $2.9 million is made possible by year-round donations,
growing endowment, earned income, trail admission, membership, and major gifts
from visionary leaders.
