If you were unable to attend the Open House at Jamaica Bay on February 25th then the following excerpt from Daphne Yun (see e-mail below), would be of interest to you.

For those of you not aware, there is a project on the books for an East Pond valve replacement. Until the project begins, I will be working with the staff to do the water level and trails management. Our goal this year is to make the East Pond just as good or even better than last season for Shorebird migration.

From Daphne….

“The National Park Service (NPS) extends its gratitude to those who were able to attend the Vegetation and Viewshed Management Open House at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center this past Saturday, February 25th.  NPS invites those who were not able to attend the event to view the materials presented on Saturday, which will remain on display in the Visitor Center through Sunday March 12th. During this time, the Visitor Center will be open Fridays through Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The materials on display include specific habitat and viewshed management actions along the West Pond Loop Trail from Bench 1 to Bench 13, as well as draft goals and objectives for the forthcoming Stewardship Plan for the East and West Pond. Through March 12th, stakeholders are welcome to provide feedback and comments in writing at the Visitor Center. Those who are unable to visit the Refuge in person are also welcome to submit questions and comments by email to gateway_feedb...@nps.gov, or in writing at Daphne Yun, Gateway National Recreation Area (ATTN: East and West Pond Stewardship Plan), 210 New York Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10305. More information about the Stewardship Plan process can be found at https://www.nps.gov/gate//getinvolved/stewardship-plan.htm.”
