New York County -in N.Y. City- including Governors, Randalls, Roosevelt and Manhattan islands and the adjacent waters and skies above - thru Sunday, August 30th -
A Dickcissel showed and, especially, was heard calling a lot on Governors Island near Fort Jay on Sunday. Many other migrants were also showing there, including Bobolinks, with that species also out at Randalls Island for Sunday, along with many other migrants. Randalls continues as the site within this county to find Yellow-crowned Night Herons, sometimes present in the multiple at this season. An adult male Blue Grosbeak was seen in the early part of Sunday at Central Park, but may have moved out. That bird could still be present on Manhattan, and also could show in Central again. A Kentucky Warbler, fairly rare in southbound migration here, was reported by R. Davis and is sure to be sought after by others in the area of Central Park where seen. Without that species, Central enjoyed at least 23 species of migratory warblers on the day, some species continuing to be fairly common, even after multiple nights of good migrations that held many night-flying warblers moving well south now. Besides Blue Grosbeak, some Indigo Buntings were starting to appear including at Central Park, and flycatcher diversity continued at a good pace in most of the county. Olive-sided Flycatcher, along with many Empidonax-genus flycatchers, were present at Central Park and elsewhere in the county again on Sunday. Also ongoing have been Great Crested Flyctchers, E. Wood-Pewees, E. Phoebes, and E. Kingbirds. Thrushes found continue to include Veery in numbers, and Wood and Swainsons Thrushes, as in prior recent days. Thanks to hundreds of observers and photographers all around the county and out at all hours, for sightings, alerts, reports and hot tips, with very many affiliated with not-for-profit organizations and institutions that offer regular guided bird walks in the interest of education, conservation, sound science and natural diversity.
