Manhattan, N.Y. City -
thru Thursday, Oct. 1 -

There was a report of Blue Grosbeak at Central Park for early Thursday in
female-like plumage. A fair amount of nocturnal migration was occurring
overnight Thursday into Friday - today - and we shall learn how much of that
nocturnal flight might have included liftoff and departure for birds having
been lingering in Manhattan and other areas in this region. Indigo Buntings
were much more widely reported again, including low multiples from around
Central Park.

Yellow-billed Cuckoos were noted from several locations, including Central
Park. Common Nighthawks were still pushing thru as well on Thursday, Oct. 1st.
Great Crested Flycatcher was again found at Central Park on the first day of
October. Modest numbers of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are present. Purple
Finches were again appearing including some in Central Park on Thursday. Many
observers noted an increase of Brown Thrashers from all around Manhattan, and
including Central Park.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were again seen in fairly good numbers, most of all
at locations with many appropriate flowers for their feeding needs. Chimney
Swifts were ongoing, into high double-digits. Green Heron was still being
noted from Central Park on Thursday.

At least 21 species of warblers were found in Central Park on Thursday, with
some species running very slightly late at this date. These included
Blackburnian, also seen elsewhere in Manhattan, and Tennessee, as well as
Hooded Warblers, and at least 14 of the warbler species into double-digits per
species for the day. 22 or more warbler species were found for all of
Manhattan on Thursday.

Red-breasted Nuthatches were seen in multiple locations of Central Park, as was
so elsewhere in Manhattan. At least 4 vireo species were found at Central Park,
including White-eyed and Philadelphia, as well as Red-eyed and Blue-headed
Vireos, the latter two species in the multiple.

A minimum of 8 native sparrow species were found in Manhattan, with all of
those species also being seen at Central Park on Thursday. Lincolns Sparrow was
found in at least 8 different parks and greenspaces of Manhattan. White-crowned
was among the ongoing sparrow species, including some at Central Park on
Thursday.

Ongoing into October at Central Park were American Wigeon, Green-winged Teals,
Ruddy and Wood Ducks, N. Shovelers and other waterfowl. A rather small number
of shorebirds were still being found around Manhattan. Laughing Gulls were
again found in numbers, including at or over Central Park on Oct. 1st.

Over all of Manhattan, more than 105 species of birds were found on Thursday,
and of those, nearly 90 species were seen at Central Park, these by many
observers out at all varied hours of the day, and at Central, in all sectors of
that park rather than only in a limited portion. Also providing many of the
first sightings of some species for the new month was Inwood Hill Park, while
additional parks and many other greenspaces added a wide variety of birds to
the start of October.

Thanks to hundreds of observers and photographers either walking independently
or in support of, or leading, guided not-for-profit bird walks, of which there
were several in Central Park alone on Thursday, plus other such not-for-profit
bird walks at other Manhattan locations as well, on the day, for so many
sightings, alerts, tips in the field, and reliable reports.

Good birding,

Tom Fiore
