The Western Sandpiper found Saturday by Jim Pawlicki and Dave Wheeler was
present again this morning between 9 and 10:00. Other shorebirds here were
2 Pectoral Sandpipers, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, a handful each of Semi. Plovers,
Least Sandpipers, and Semi. Sandpipers. The Western is an adult in fading
breeding plumage. In good views, red on the bases of the rear scapulars can
be seen and with the best views, red can also be seen on the more anterior
scapulars. Following is a Google link of the spot, courtesy of Jim
Osterlund. Note, the birds are sometimes in the area that appears to have
much less or even no water, further back and slightly left. All of these
little puddles are pretty close together - no driving necessary once you are
there.
