THE LINNAEAN SOCIETY OF NEW YORK SPEAKERS PROGRAM
Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009, 7:30 p.m.
The American Museum of Natural History, Linder Auditorium
Speaker: John Kricher, Meneely Professor of Biology, Wheaton College

Subject: Birds and the Balance of Nature
This talk is based on Kricher's recent book The Balance
of Nature: Ecology's Enduring Myth (Princeton University Press,
2009). He will use birds to illustrate how the balance of nature can
be traced through human history and how it became incorporated both in
evolutionary and ecological theory. He will then demonstrate why it
is a false construct based entirely on teleological reasoning and,
from there, discuss how current changes in bird populations and avian
biodiversity should be monitored and interpreted. He will discuss
some of the reasoning behind why it is essential that avian
biodiversity be preserved.

John Kricher has written extensively on ecology and natural
history
especially in South America. He has authored three ecology field
guides and a book on the Galapagos but is perhaps best known for his
book A Neotropical Companion. He is and has been an officer of several
ornithological societies.

The meeting is open to the public, without charge.
Please join us for what promises to be a very exciting talk. Enter the
Museum at West 77th Street. If you would like to meet John Kricher
prior to the talk, join us at Pappardella's Restaurant, 75th Street
and Columbus Avenue at 6 p.m. The reservation will be in the name of
Alice.
