At about 4:15 this afternoon I found a basic plumage RED PHALAROPE at the south end of Sagaponack Pond (Suffolk Co.). The bird was best viewed from the pond entrance along Sagg Main Street just before the beach. The bird was at 40°54'39.20"N, 72°17'8.46"W. The only avian sign that spring might be in the process of happening here on the East End were the 7 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the southeast corner of the pond.
At nearby Mecox Bay the extensive flat had several hundred shorebirds, although PIPING PLOVER was the only non-wintering species present. A first-year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was in the gull flock.
