Highlights of reports received April 22 through April 29 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include BLACK VULTURE, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK, PALM WARBLER and BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER.
April 29, a BLACK VULTURE was found atop the chimney at Alden Middle
School, on Crittenden Road in the Village of Alden.
From the Ontario Plains, April 22, at least 2, very rare in spring,
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at Johnson Creek Road and Hartland-Somerset
Townline Road. In the BOS archives, there are only 15 spring records
of AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER during the past 50 years. The plovers were
not relocated, though GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS and
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS continue at this location.
First reports of spring migrants this week - 6 BL.-GR. GNATCATCHERS
at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, PALM WARBLER at Point Gratiot in
Dunkirk, BLUE-HEADED VIREO in the Town of Wilson, and April 27,
ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island.
Also at Tifft Nature Preserve - BLUE-WINGED TEAL, LESSER SCAUP,
AMERICAN BITTERN, SORA, 12 HERMIT THRUSHES, 5 PINE WARBLERS, 5 FOX
SPARROWS, abundant WHITE-THR. SPARROWS and 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
April 24 on Lake Ontario, a first year ICELAND GULL on the small
pier off Krull Park in Olcott.
Back on April 19 in Chautauqua County, LA. WATERTHRUSH on Bartlett
Hill Road in the Town of Villenova. Also in Chautauqua County, at the
mouth of Cattaraugus Creek in Hanover - GREAT EGRET, 15 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS, 77 CASPIAN TERNS and 15 COMMON TERNS, plus RED-BR. MERGANSER
and HOODED MERGANSER. Other CASPIAN TERNS this week on the Niagara
River off Grand Island and at Dunkirk Harbor.
On the upper Niagara River this week, CLIFF SWALLOWS have returned
to two breeding colonies - the north Grand Island bridge viewed from
Buckhorn Island State Park and the towers on Tonawanda Island in North
Tonawanda. At the Motor Island heronry, 44 GREAT EGRETS including 37
on nest. OSPREYS on nest at Buckhorn Island and in Tonawanda, viewed
from the Mid-river Marina. And, BALD EAGLE still at Navy Island, a
former nesting location.
Other reports this week - in the Iroquois Refuge, OSPREYS on the
tree nest along the trail east of Meadville Road, with a sub-adult
BALD EAGLE nearby, and a PEREGRINE FALCON reported for the second time
at Feeder Road and Route 77. At Lakeside Beach State Park in the Town
of Carlton, PILEATED WOODPECKER and YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER. And, AMERICAN
WOODCOCKS still sounding and displaying in the Towns of Stockton and
Holland.
