An Alder Flycatcher was heard calling and seen briefly this morning at Big Sandy Pond at the Nature Conservancy's Calverton Ponds Preserve on Old River Road in Calverton. Big Sandy Pond is a coastal plain pond where water levels in the pond are solely dependent on groundwater elevation. Coastal plain ponds have been identified as a Long Island and New York State ecologically significant habitat.
The 1980-85 Breeding Bird Atlas had five breeding records of Alder Flycatcher for Region 10, all from the east end of LI. The 2000-2005 Atlas had one Region 10 breeding record. The number of breeding records of both Willow and Alder Flycatcher increased Statewide from the first to second atlas (1,932 records to 2,619 records for WF, 1,929 records to 2,805 records for AF). However, Alder Flycatcher showed a decline in the southeastern part of the State in the last atlas.
