About 1:10p while drinking an Americano in a small vest pocket park I spotted a soaring bird heading north on set wings and didn't have an immediate guess on what it could be. Always with my binoculars I used them to watch this dark, broad winged bird with a long thin neck start to circle on set wings. Only occasionally would it flap it's wings and when it did the action was mostly in the wing tips or hands. At other times it would bend a wing to correct its position but it mostly circled without flapping. The wings appeared very broad front to back with an almost equal amount of head & tail on either side. The tail was long and appeared rounded at the tip. It circled high and east of 2nd Ave. & was drifting south. I wasn't able to watch it long enough to see which direction it went. I mention the Americano because luck plays a huge role sometimes. My iPhone app "AroundMe" said that my choice of coffee shop, Choux Factory near the United Nations, was closed so I headed to the Amish Market near the "park" above. Funny thing is, on my walk home I noticed that Choux Factory was open. I'm so glad the web was wrong! I spotted an Anhinga once before on Manhattan in Central Park on 30-June-2006.
