This morning the seabird show continued at Shinnecock. From 6:30-7:30 a.m. at least 120 shearwaters were off the Inlet, many at fairly close range off the East Jetty. I estimated about 70 of these were Cory's Shearwaters, and 50 Greater Shearwaters. There were also at least 80 Wilson's Storm-petrels. The strong northeast wind seemed to have gotten the birds up, as opposed to last evening's calm conditions. I joined Doug Futuyma at Cupsogue County Park around 8 a.m., where we had only a few very distant large shearwaters, and 50 Wilson's Storm-petrels. The Hudsonian Godwit was still on the flats in the morning, and some shorebird arrivals included: 2 "Western" Willets, 3 Red Knots, 3 Sanderling, and a Dunlin. Around 11:00, Doug reported that he had 60-70 distant shearwaters at Shinnecock, including about 10 Greaters, but no Wilson's Storm-petrels. Go figure.
