The last few days, with light winds and partly overcast skies, have been ideal for viewing perched and flying raptors. On the Jones barrier strip yesterday we had three Rough-legged Hawks, a dark morph bird perched just south of Bay Parkway roughly opposite Field 10, and light morph birds at Tobay Sanctuary and Cedar Beach. A birder had indicated that he had seen two dark-morph birds along the strip so there are at least four Rough-legged Hawks present. We also observed four Peregrine Falcons along with six Northern Harriers.
On Dune Road this morning, in addition to Luke Ormand's Merlin, I observed Sharp-Shinned, Cooper's and Northern Harrier hunting on the marsh and along its edges. A Short-eared Owl was sitting on a marsh bank on the north side of Dune Road west of Triton Lane. A search for marsh sparrows was unsuccessful although Swamp, Tree, Song, and White-throated Sparrows were observed.
