I birded Eastern LI yesterday with Andrew Baksh, Rich Kelly and Al Lindberg. Montauk Point was uneventful in the morning, with thousands of sea ducks continuing, but nothing noteworthy. The Western Tanager was cooperative at the feeders at the corner of Big Reed Path and Deer Way in Montauk. Two 2nd winter Iceland Gulls were at the west jetty of Montauk Harbor. A single fly-by Razorbill was the only one we saw all day, and a Peregrine Falcon was on the jetty. We were unsuccessful in our search for the Napeague Northern Shrike and Snowy Owl, but "Larry" the Lesser Black-backed Gull was on the beach behind the house at address 160 at Lazy Point. Following a call from Tom Burke, we returned to Montauk Point and found six King Eiders (2 imm. males and 4 females) off the parking lot at Camp Hero. A search for rare geese in East Hampton was unsuccessful in the afternoon. En route to Shinnecock, Andrew, Rich and Al spotted an adult Glaucous Gull perched on a radio tower along Route 27 in Southampton. I was driving separately, so I missed this bird. We then drove Dune Road from Shinnecock to Quogue. The highlights were two Short-eared Owls flying about the edge of the marsh. One was about a mile west of the Ponquogue Bridge. The other was at the Quogue Preserve.
