Birded Sunken Meadow State Park (Suffolk County) this afternoon (3:00-5:30).
The best find during that time were 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. These
birds were initially found among 90 Canada Geese feeding on the lawn just
a little west of the roundabout at the end of the park entrance road, then
seen again later on the field just east of the main parking lot. There was a
fair mix of other waterfowl scattered about on Sunken Meadow Creek, mainly
west of the entrance road. The mix included all 3 merganser species, Lesser
Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Gadwall, Black Duck, Mallard, and Coot. On Long
Island Sound there were very low numbers of Common Goldeneye, R-b Merganser
and Common Loon. Beside good numbers of returned Red-winged Blackbirds, the
only passerine of note was a lone FOX SPARROW found on the inner marsh
trail.
