Wow! I can't believe such interest in muskrats -- or that this many posts about
a non-bird have come through without some dissent. I thought it would be
interesting to check my pictures, as far as where they were taken. Most have
been from Jamaica Bay W.R. (Big John's Pond, the East Pond, and one on land
somewhere), followed by Alley Pond Environmental Center (Alley Creek and the
man-made pond) -- so basically from the brackish areas that I go to most often
(and all within the last 5 years). They seem pretty much run of the mill in
these areas of Queens. Now if anyone is wondering about whether they stay
active in winter, my last pictures were taken on the miserably cold day in
January when I went to look for the Tufted Duck in Cold Spring Harbor. At least
one was swimming around on the little pond nearby with the Ring-necked Ducks
(Suffolk co.).

Muskrats have been running around Broad Channel-Queens since the 1930's when my
neighbor was born. We were just talking about how rare they are lately....
