At a cold and windy Connetquot River State Park this morning there were three Wood Ducks and a few Golden-crowned Kinglets but not much else. From CRSP I traveled over to West End (Jones Beach State Park), stopping at the Field 10 Fishing Station. At approx. 11:15AM a Red-necked Grebe was on the north side of the State Boat Channel along the marsh edge and opposite the fishing piers. After making a few phone calls I was joined by Sam Janazzo, Sy Schiff and Joe Viglietta who were to obtain some decent looks at the bird.
Other recent arrivals at JBSP were Great Egret, Boat-tailed Grackle, and Tree Swallow. After spending ten days in the Rio Grande Valley with daytime temperatures in the mid 80's the return to 25-35F temperatures was a bit of a shock.
