Last fall I reported a Monk Parakeet nest on route 107, Hicksville Road. They
survived the winter and a second nest is being built about 2 miles to the north.
The first nest is about 1 mile south of the route 107 exit, exit 29, of the
Southern State Parkway, just before a Gulf station on the right (west) side of
the road by a strip mall opposite a good bagel shop.
The second and much smaller nest is also on Hicksville Road, about 1.5 miles
north of the Southern State exit, and about 1/2 mile south of Hempstead
Turnpike, just south of a 7 11 on the west side of the road, and a bit north of
a traffic light where Stewart Avenue branches off to the right, just after a
small strip mall. Both nests are on telephone poles. Town lines get a bit
confusing here, but I believe the northern nest is in Bethpage, while the
original nest is in Massapequa or Seaford
