July 8 -- Western New York - In Tonawanda I had one adult Osprey and three young Ospreys at the nest that can be seen from River Road at Tonawanda Asphalt. At Motor Island as seen from the Sheridan Drive Boat Launch (ask permission before parking) there were 51 Great Egrets, still 31 Great Blue Herons, and 32 Double-crested Cormorants, but the Black-cr. Night-Herons are gone. At Goat Island looking at the small islands above the Horseshoe Falls there were 3 adult and 19 young Black-cr. Night-Herons, 5 Great Egrets (only one standing on nest) and 228 Double-crested Cormorants. At Fort Niagara there were 116 Bonaparte's Gulls on the red roof of the Coast Guard house. The best time to view them is the hottest part of the day (around 3:00 PM). They can no longer forage because of the heat, and come in from Lake Ontario and rest on the roof with their bills open and their tongues hanging out. At the Castle at Fort Niagara there were 12 adult Cliff Swallows, 5 young Cliff Swallows and 15 Cliff Swallow nests. In the south-west most nest there was a parasitic House Sparrow nestling in a Cliff Swallow nest, being fed by Cliff Swallows. Even an adult House Sparrow was fluttering its wings and begging for food from the Cliff Swallows! Best Wishes for Great Birding, Bill Watson --
