Oil City Road, 26 July Our extended LI birding group journeyed to the Liberty Loop Trail parking lot at the north end of the of the Wallkill NWR. The loop trail itself is marked with a sign going off to the left when facing the road. About half way to the distance line of trees is where we heard and saw the SEDGE WREN.
Across the road from the parking lot is a path bisecting the fields. Some 20-30 yds down, on the left, an overgrown side path leads to a rise overlooking a large pond where the SANDHILL CRANE landed, after flying toward us while calling loudly. It was in the extreme far end along with 4 Great Egrets and 2 Great Blue Herons. It eventually flew off shortly after we all arrived at the viewing spot. We did not see the IBIS nor did any of the numerous birders we saw, and stopped to chat with. Still, we considered the trip satisfactory having found two of our three target birds. Other birds of interest were Wood Duck, Red-tail Hawk, Killdeer, Solitary Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Eastern Phoebe, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Eastern Bluebird, Indigo Bunting and Bobolink Lots of butterflies including Giant Swallowtail, Viceroy and a slew of others which await examination of the numerous photographs taken. Same goes for a number of very pretty dragonflies. This kept me busy while we waited in vain for the Ibis to show.
