1) Arrived at 0730, early enough to find a non-metered parking spot.
2) Found ~ 10-15 birders already "on stations".
3) This # grew to at least 30 by 1215, when during my 4th or 5th "forced march"
up & down the boardwalk (from the "Olde" Parachute Jump to beyond the Aquarium)
I came upon a group having a "Birdasm" (more on this term below).
4) I was put on the bird by Seth Ausubel & Rich Freid- thanks guys!
5) Had wonderful looks at the GHGL- also had a gloriously cold, "life"
lemonade, at you guessed it...Nathans Famous!
6) My 3rd 1st of the day was actually my 1st 1st of the day. I had never heard
the term "Birdasm" before that morning. While I was finding some shade, along
with other birders, under the overhang of the public restrooms on the
boardwalk, the "smartest" birder at Coney Island that day, walked up to us,
wearing only her hat, her binoculars and her..bathing suit! After looking for
the gull earlier, she had been in the water, got refreshed, and was now looking
for the gull again- I sure wish I had thought of that! She went on to explain
that even while in the water, she was keeping an eye out for the sure to follow
"Birdasm's, once the Gray-Hooded Gull was spotted! I'm sorry to say, I have
spoken with this lady before at other gatherings such as this, but just can not
remember her name- thanks anyway for your good humor!
7) Left the boardwalk ~ 1315, and after fighting the Belt, the Southern State,
and finally the LIE, arrived home at 1530...hot and tired (A/C in car N/G)
8) Proceeded to put on my bathing suit, head for our condo's pool, and as I
passed one of the ponds on the property, got my FOS Spotted Sandpiper- my cup
overflowed!
Cheers,Bob
